The bedroom is one of the most important rooms in a home. It is a sanctuary where you rest, relax, and rejuvenate after a long day. One of the most important factors in creating a comfortable and peaceful bedroom environment is choosing the right window dressings. The choice of options is wide and varied, so lets take a closer look at a range of products and try to hone in on the key element that are needed to create the perfect bedrooms.

There’s a theory that says you should only have calm or pale colours in a bedroom, to enable a more peaceful mindset to help you sleep, so no reds or sunshine yellows but there’s also a school of thought that says being comfortable in the space is more important so if red is your favourite colour then you’ll be more relaxed in a red room than in a pastel room and therefore sleep better. The compromise is to go paler and add accents of colour with cushions, throws or window dressings.

Texture can really make a bedroom a warm and inviting space, but again personal preference can play a really big part in that. Soft and cosy fabrics such as boucle or velvet can create an enveloping and snug vibe, but to some people they’re over-stimulating and too heavy, preferring simple mid-weight fabric, perhaps with just an embroidered embellishment. Others swear by crisp cool cotton, particularly in the hot summer nights and you can replicate this feel at your window not only in fabric but also with glossy painted shutters. Wooden blinds or stained wooden shutters are a great accompaniment to natural fabrics too, like cotton and linen, creating a peaceful and calming vibe.

What’s the best product for a bedroom window?

With so many different options to choose from where do you start? Again, you can let personal preference play its part to some extent. Prefer the classic look of wood? Shutters and wood blinds are ideal. Those looking for a softer look can opt for Roman blinds. Need something with thermal benefits? Duette® blinds are a viable option. Additional solar reflective challenges? Pleated blinds can help here. Lets take a look at each of them in more detail.

Shutters are an ideal choice for creating a safe “shut the world out” type setting which can be really beneficial to aiding sleep.
Styles such as Full Height, Tier on Tier and Solid shutters all create that snug feeling when they’re closed and often that can be enough. For shutters such as Café style, where only a portion of the window is covered, you’re likely to want additional solutions. You can opt for a range of blind styles and fabrics and choose to lower them fully behind your shutters or simply to meet the top.

Beyond the standard shades

If you want a traditional look with fabric and are looking for a blind that’s available in a wide choice of colour, texture and pattern then Roman blinds are probably the most obvious choice. They’re a great way to add accent colour, or to co-ordinate with bedding to create a more pulled-together look. Our Roman blinds can also be made with different linings, so you can opt for an interlining that helps retain heat, or if you’re a light sleeper and tend to wake as the sun rises then a blackout lining can really help with that challenge.

With their honeycomb design that traps warm air at draughty windows, Duette® blinds can help if your bedroom often feels cold at the end of the day, which isn’t always conducive to a good night’s sleep. There’s plenty of colour choice too, and the effect is slightly softer, especially when the blinds are lowered so worth considering if you’re a little wary of having too much colour. Although they’re not soft fabrics in the traditional sense, there are some that have a silk appearance, and some have a pattern to them that also adds a little texture.

Visually similar to Duette® blinds, Pleated blinds are a single panel, rather than Duette®’s combined double panels. They’re very slimline and sleek looking too, so if you have a series of smaller windows or reduced space around the window frame they may be the perfect choice. If your bedroom faces south and gets a lot of direct sunlight through the day, Pleated blinds can help keep the temperature down, as certain fabrics have a solar reflective coating. A range of colours and textured patterns give you a range of choice too.

With a look that’s similar to shutters but the space-saving benefits of blinds, wooden blinds can be a great choice for bedroom windows. Wooden blinds give you that greater level of light control while still affording privacy, which is quite an important factor in a bedroom. Bay windows can be a really stunning feature but they do present their own challenge. If you have a box bay window, then shutters can work really well here, as they highlight the shape, hugging the window frame and almost pushing the shape out of the room and making it seem larger and more expansive, rather than the less satisfying but frequently seen curtain rod placed across the front section with floor length curtains that almost act like decorative panels when closed - it may be effective at blocking light but it also effectively blocks off the feature from view and making for a visually small bedroom.

Doors within a bedroom can really change how the space works, especially if they bring different materials into the room or change the ratio from the top of the frames to the ceiling with the existing windows, or the spacing along the walls between windows and doors. If the door opens onto a patio or out into a garden then it's lovely to be able to bring the outside into your interiors and create a blur between the two, rather than having the bedroom window treatment act as a barrier.

The most important question to ask yourself is "do I need access to this door". If the answer is no, then you can really go wild with your window treatment ideas and use block colour blinds as decorative panels. If you do use the doors, then easy access becomes your prime concern.
